개발도상국의 미래상으로서의 선진개발국가들은 세계열강 혹은 제국이라는 이름으로 수십세기동안 세계의 흐름을 움직여왔다. 과거에 식민지였던 가난한 나라들이 물리적 속박에서 벗어난 지금, 신자유주의의 흐름아래 또다른 형태의 식민지적 행보를 거듭하고 있다. 이주와 이동의 궤적이 동쪽에서 서쪽으로, 남쪽에서 북쪽으로 늘어날수록 그 복잡하고 다양한 삶의 시간의 층들이 충돌하고 빚어내는 불협화음은 커져만 간다. 나는「열망으로의 접근」에서 선보일 3편의 영상연작과 OHP드로잉을 통해서 지난 몇 년간 직간접적으로 체험했던 다양한 시간의 층의로 인한 삶의 복잡성과 현대사회의 예측할 수 없는 미래와 폐기된 과거가 어떻게 다시 현재에서 부활하는가등에 관한 심리적 풍경을 공상과학이라는 문학적 장르의 구조를 바탕으로 재구성하고자 했다. 그러므로 "이상향"으로서의 도시가 갖는 "공허함"과 "허무함" 그리고 "과잉", "속도"의 현상이면에 존재하는 "피폐", "페허", 혹은 "결핍"의 시각적 서사를 만들어 내고자 했다. ■ 김세진

Developed countries which might be seen as the future of developing countries have been controlling the world for centuries. Some were empires and they are now world powers. Their past colonies, mostly poor countries, though free from actual regulation, still seem to remain under threat of re-colonisation from Neo-liberalism. As migration and moves from the east to the west and from the south to the north increase, so the discords created by the conflicts between different times and lives become considerable. A series of three videos and OHP drawings in my solo show Proximity of Longing employ a sci-fi literary structure to reconstruct psychological landscapes addressing the complexity of lives which layers of different times cause the unpredictable future of contemporary society, and the resurrection of the discarded past. I wanted to present the emptiness of a utopian city and create a visual narrative of desolation, ruin, or lack behind the ' excessiveness' and the ' acceleration' in contemporary society. ■ KIMSEJIN
